Genetics and genomics

Genetics is a medical speciality that looks after people who may have, or who may be at risk of developing a genetic condition (a syndrome, disease or illness caused by an altered gene or chromosome). Genomics is the study of genes and how alterations can lead to changes in how proteins function or are produced by cells.

Depending on what type of service you need, you will likely be referred by your GP or Health Professional. Assessment, diagnosis, genetic testing and genetic counselling are provided by a team hosted by the Trust at Heavitree hospital. Peninsula Clinical Genetics cover the whole of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The Exeter Genomic Laboratory and the Peninsula Clinical Genetics Service together form the Academic Department of Genomic Medicine.
