Preceptorship Programme

For those joining the North Devon District Hospital, the Preceptorship Programme has been developed to support the preceptee during their transition from student to newly registered practitioner. The 12 month programme aims to be supportive and to facilitate the further development of professional knowledge, skills and values.

What is Preceptorship?

The term Preceptorship describes ‘a period of structured transition for the newly registered Practitioner during which he or she will be supported by a Preceptor, to develop confidence as an autonomous professional, refine skills, values and behaviours and to continue on their journey of life-long learning’(DH, 2010). The Trusts preceptor mentoring programme has also recently been implemented providing preceptees with a senior leader ‘Buddy’ to offer guidance and development opportunities.

Preceptorship is designed to combine facilitated experiential learning in the work place with a theoretical component based upon facilitated group learning.

An effective transition allows you to provide effective care more quickly, feel better about your role and more likely to remain in the profession (DH, 2009).

This Programme is multi-professional and supports newly registered nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, return to practice practitioners, registrants entering a new part of the register and European/overseas prepared practitioners who register with the NMC / HCPC.

Why does the Trust offer Preceptorship?

The Preceptorship programme provides an opportunity for the Preceptee to:

  • Develop confidence
  • Benefit from multi-professional learning
  • Feel valued and respected by your employer
  • Receive coaching from a senior leader
  • Be supported by a Preceptor and other colleagues in the clinical area for 12 months
  • Apply and develop the knowledge, skills and values already learned
  • Develop specific role specific competencies
  • Have protected time to undertake the Preceptorship Programme, attend the study days, meet with their Preceptor/Manager and Preceptorship Lead as planned
  • Reflect on practice and receive constructive feedback
  • Receive career development guidance
  • Become Practice Supervisor ready
  • Compile a Preceptorship Portfolio and have the option to APEL the Portfolio towards degree / Masters credits with the University of Plymouth
