What is the New Hospital Programme (NHP)?

The Government has committed to build 40 new hospitals by 2030, backed by an initial £3.7 billion. Together with eight existing schemes, this will mean 48 hospitals by the end of the decade, the biggest hospital building programme in a generation. The hospitals will provide better care for patients, an improved working environment for staff and help the NHS reach its net zero carbon ambition. The commitment forms part of the wider Health Infrastructure Plan, a strategic long-term investment to ensure our world-class healthcare system and staff has the world-class facilities it needs for the future.

What does this mean for Northern Devon?

This is an important vote of commitment for our hospital and is likely to be the most significant investment in healthcare infrastructure for the population of Northern Devon since North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) opened in 1979.

It’s an incredible opportunity to ensure we have fit for purpose facilities for modern and digitally-enabled healthcare provision. The estates investment will also support us as we continue to develop our clinical strategy of locally integrated care and more widely networked models of care across Northern and Eastern Devon.

What is the Our Future Hospital programme?

Our Future Hospital is the NDDH programme set up to manage and deliver this investment opportunity.

We are using this investment opportunity to futureproof our acute site to provide better outcomes for our local community and improved working environments for our staff.

What are the programme’s ambitions?

What will the funding cover?

The funding is for redevelopment at the acute site at NDDH only, however we recognise that to deliver on our ambition of right care, right place, we need to consider our whole model of care across acute and community sites.

Our strategic case has focused on three main phases:

Phase One – rebuilding of on-site accommodation and staff wellbeing facilities

Phase Two – creation of a new block delivering a range of acute care services

Phase Three – refurbishment of the main tower to deliver all future in-patient ward-based accommodation requirements

How long will the programme take?

This is a long term programme, the estimated competition date is 2030 *subject to NHP approval

How can I get involved?

Our Five Ambitions – what do they mean to you?

This is an exciting opportunity to future-proof our healthcare services in Northern Devon and it is really important that our patients, staff, local community and stakeholders are involved in setting our shared ambitions. We want to know what our five ambitions mean to you.
